The changes of global environmental conditions have placed great challenges to the governments and societies. Business organizations are blamed to be the sources of these environmental problems. Although it is not easy for companies to go green, we need a renewed concern for our environment in order to revive the nation’s economic and competitiveness. This research project sought to outline a sustainable development framework for Perak State in ensuring the achievement of economic growth, social cohesion and ecological balance. A total of 571 business companies from the State have participated in this study.
We aimed to understand their awareness on the environmental trends, its impacts and the benefits of greater environmental commitment. A structural equation model was created to illustrate the key factors that influencing the Perak business companies’ attitudes in environmental management. We have idenfied four main drivers for the Green Responsive Initiative (GRI): (1) regulations; (2) social responsibility; (3) pro-environmental organizational culture; and (4) organizational supports. We also found that business industries in Perak face both internal and external barriers when seeking to address their environmental issues and embarking on green practices. While the results have indicated that lacking of financial resources and skilled staff as the main internal barriers, light penalty for violation of environmental regulations was known to be the strongest external barrier. Drawing conclusions from the research analysis, we have proposed strategies on environmental improvement. Finally, we have drafted the recommended policy based on four areas: (1) Environmental Policy Statements; (2) Environmental Management System (EMS); (3) Environmental Performance Reporting; and (4) Occupational Safety and Health.
