Sustainable Urban Regeneration Policies

The most important interventions in the recent decades, targeting urban areas, are considering the urban regeneration and sustainable development. Urban regeneration is defined as the ‘comprehensive and integrated vision and action which leads to the resolution of urban problems and which seeks to bring about a lasting improvement in the economic, physical, social and environmental condition of an area that has been subject to change’ (Robert and Sykes, 2000, p 17). It is a process focusing on solving important problems of the city, which will benefit both current population, and the future population, in order to achieve the quality standards and sustainability of the communities. As such it is imperative that urban regeneration and sustainable development stand at the core of city planning, such as the case for the historical metropolitan city of Ipoh, in the state Perak.
